COURSE TITLE : COLLEGE ALGEBRA
PREREQUISITES: Two years of high school algebra and a Math
Enhanced ACT of at least 19 or DSM 085 or AAPP Placement.
TEXT: College
Algebra through Modeling and Visualization, by Rockswold, third
edition; Addison-Wesley.
Note: A
TI-83 or TI-84 plus graphing calculator is required for this course. TI-89 and
TI-92 calculators will not be allowed.
PURPOSE: This
course is designed to help students develop basic skills and
concepts in college algebra. It satisfies the Area IV-B General
Studies requirement and meets specific requirements for programs as
outlined in the catalog.
OBJECTIVES: Upon
completion of this course, students will have:
1.
Enhanced mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills.
2.
Applied algebraic methods to the
solution of practical problems.
3. Explored
the capabilities of the graphing calculator to better understand
algebraic concepts.
4.
Developed an understanding of
functions from a graphical as well as a symbolic viewpoint.
5.
Developed
familiarity with linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic
functions.
6.
Solved systems of linear equations
by a variety of methods, including matrix methods.
7.
Applied counting principles in the
computation of simple and compound probabilities.

Students receiving the
lottery scholarships must earn a 2.75 GPA after attempting 24 credit
hours and a 3.0 GPA after attempting 48 hours or more. Students who
drop below full-time status (12 hours) during the first 14 days of
the semester will have their awards adjusted and will owe money to
the University. Students who drop after the 14th day of
class will have their future lottery scholarships suspended unless
the drop was approved in advance by the Office of Financial Aid.
Students may appeal the suspension if the drop is due to documented
personal illness, illness or death of immediate family member,
extreme financial hardship, military service or other extraordinary
circumstances beyond the student’s control. The lottery appeal form
