1630 Syllabus

COURSE TITLE: FINITE MATHEMATICS

PREREQUISTIES: Two years of high school algebra and a Math Enhanced ACT greater than 25 or MATH 1710

TEXT: Finite Mathematics (8th Edition) by Mazrahi and Sullivan; John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (2000)

PURPOSE: This course is designed to help students develop basic skills and concepts in college  mathematics necessary for the managerial, social and life sciences.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, students will have used:

  1. Probabilistic methods and models

  2. Linear programming methods and models

  3. Vector and matrix methods and models

  4.  Mathematics of finance to solve certain types of problems that arise in business, finance, and related areas where
    mathematical modeling is used.

REQUIREMENTS: Specific grading requirements are determined by the individual instructor of the course.
In general, the learner is expected to

  1. Attend class lectures.
  2. Participate in class activities.
  3. Read and study class assignments.
  4. Solve assigned problem sets.
  5. Write tests and quizzes.

TOPICAL OUTLINE: This course consists of selected topics from Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 in the required text, including solving systems of linear equations, Leontief models, linear programming, mathematics of finance, set theory and probability theory.
